Meet Teacher Heidi

Experienced elementary teacher, 7th grade literature and writing teacher and homeschool mom of all subjects.

Hi, my name is Ms. Heidi. I love teaching and working with children, and I have been an educator in several different capacities for the past 25 years. I am a certified teacher and registered instructor with IEW (The Institute for Excellence in Writing). My professional background includes six years as an elementary teacher, one year as a 7th grade literature and writing teacher, and eight years as a substitute teacher for all grade levels. Currently, I am a homeschool mom and have been teaching my two children in all subject areas for the past ten years.

Although I have experience in a variety of subjects, I especially enjoy teaching language arts and writing classes using IEW methods. I have used IEW with my own children and have found it to be very effective at teaching students to write well. In my classes, students learn foundational skills such as notetaking and outlining and writing paragraphs. They also gain tools and strategies for building strong sentences, writing descriptively, and communicating effectively. Using the stylistic techniques they learn in class, students have the opportunity to practice and experiment with language in a way that is interesting and engaging. My teaching style involves the use of both direct instruction and modeling, and my lessons provide clear examples, instruction, as well as demonstrations of how to apply the skills and techniques we learn within an actual piece or writing. I also integrate writing with other subject areas so that students have a meaningful context for their work.

On a more personal note, I have been married for 22 years and am the mom of two children, ages 14 and 17. Homeschooling two teenagers keeps me very busy, but I value the opportunity I have to be involved in their education and to learn alongside them. Our days are spent reading and discussing great literature, working on essays and research reports, and studying subjects such as Logic and Latin. When I have free time, I like reading, going out for coffee with friends, or being outdoors. With my family, I enjoy exploring the forests, mountains, beaches, and lakes that are abundant where we live. I also love to travel and learn about different cultures. Some of my favorite experiences include mission trips to Mexico and Ecuador, as well as backpacking through Europe.

I am excited about the opportunity to offer classes on Teach Me Truth. In both homeschooling my own children and teaching online, it is my desire to point students to their Creator. I hope that they will see God at the center of everything they are learning and seek to know and understand His truth.

Deuteronomy 6 : 5 – 9 is a reminder of the high calling we have as parents and teachers to help our students grow in their knowledge and love for God: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
