How to Teach From Home While Homeschooling: Build an Online Teaching Income

What if you could homeschool your children and build an income from home?

I know that sounds appealing to a lot of homeschool moms because I've been there.

When I first started teaching online, I was working around my children. I didn't have hours of uninterrupted time. I couldn't simply disappear into an office and work all day.

I had to build my teaching business around my family.

Today, our family has five children, and I'm incredibly thankful that my business looks very different than it did when I started.

My self-paced courses are now my #1 income earner, and I've learned something important:

You don't need dozens of random classes. You need a good core class—and a plan for building around it.

Start With One Core Class

If you're thinking about creating online classes, don't start by asking:

"What are 20 classes I could make?"

Instead, ask:

"What is ONE class I could create that people would really want?"

This becomes your core class.

Your core class should solve a problem, teach a valuable skill, or provide a complete learning experience.

It doesn't have to be enormous.

It doesn't need dozens of video lessons.

It simply needs to be something useful that families would be willing to pay for.

Once you have that core class, you can work backwards.

Build 2–5 Smaller Classes Around Your Core Class

Instead of creating completely unrelated products, think about what someone might need before, during, or after your core class.

Let's say your core class is Phonics: Learning to Read.

You could create smaller self-paced classes such as:

Letter Sounds & Beginning Phonics
CVC Words & Short Vowels
Blending & Word Families
Digraphs & Beginning Reading

Now you have several individual products—but they all lead toward your bigger phonics course.

You can sell them separately, recommend the next class, or eventually combine them into a complete phonics bundle.

That's much more strategic than constantly creating random classes.

Create a Freebie

Next, create something valuable that you can give away for free.

It could be:

A printable
A mini lesson
A sample class
A worksheet
A short video
A small activity
A beginner's guide

The goal isn't simply to give something away.

The goal is to give potential customers a chance to experience your teaching.

Someone downloads your free resource.

They discover they like your content.

They purchase a smaller class.

They enjoy that experience.

Then they're introduced to your core class.

Now you have a simple customer journey.

Your Simple Funnel

You don't need a complicated marketing system.

You can start with something as simple as:

FREEBIE → SMALLER CLASS → CORE CLASS → BUNDLE

That's it.

The freebie gets someone's attention.

The smaller class gives them a low-risk way to purchase from you.

The core class becomes your primary offer.

And eventually, you can combine multiple classes into a larger bundle.

You aren't just creating products.

You're creating a pathway.

You Don't Have to Create Everything at Once

This is especially important if you're homeschooling.

You may not have eight uninterrupted hours every day to build your business.

You may have a toddler asking for a snack.

A child who needs help with math.

Laundry.

Dinner.

A lesson to teach.

Real life doesn't stop because you're trying to build a business.

So don't create your business as though you have unlimited time.

Create it in the margins of your life.

Create one lesson.

Come back tomorrow.

Finish another.

Work on your freebie next week.

Upload your class when it's ready.

You don't need to build everything overnight.

How Much Could You Make?

Let's talk realistically.

Could you eventually build toward $2,000 per month from home?

I believe that's a realistic goal for an online teaching business.

But it isn't a promise.

Your results will depend on what you create, how you price it, how well it solves a problem, how you market it, the platforms you use, and how consistently you continue building.

For example, imagine you eventually have five self-paced classes:

4 smaller classes at $20 + 1 core class at $50

If you sell a combination of those products each month, your revenue can begin to add up.

And here's the important part:

You don't have to personally teach every single student live.

Put Your Course Somewhere People Can Find It

Creating a great course isn't enough.

People have to be able to find it.

That's why I encourage educators to list their courses on multiple platforms.

You can create resources that continue helping students after you've created them.

You can turn your knowledge into something valuable.

And you can start small.

One class.
