Let's Travel to the Continents of the World! | Montessori (Ages 4-9)

A hands-on 7-lesson journey for young learners to discover the unique cultures, animals, and landscapes of each continent.

Course Summary

As a homeschooling parent, you want your child to truly understand the world — its continents, the diverse countries they contain, the flags, animals and cultures that make each region unique. You may already be using maps and worksheets, but it’s tough to bring global geography alive — especially in a way that engages a 4-9-year-old, connects to hands-on learning (a hallmark of the Montessori approach), and gives your child real, immersive experiences rather than just textbook facts.

If children merely memorize continent names and country names, they often forget them quickly. Without interactive, multi-sensory experiences, geography becomes a series of names on a map rather than vibrant places with animals, people, colors, stories. You may find your child glazes over worksheets, resists “just another” geography module, or fails to connect those continent names with something meaningful. Meanwhile, as the parent you might feel you’re not fully leveraging the Montessori approach you value — your child could benefit from more hands-on puzzle maps, virtual field trips, art-activities, and flag-hunts that spark curiosity and deepen memory.

This self-paced 7-lesson Montessori-style course is designed especially for ages 5-9, and equips you as the homeschooling parent with exactly the kind of engaging, multi-modal resources that bring geography to life.
Together you’ll travel continent by continent: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia (Oceania), and Antarctica.
Each lesson includes a video presentation so your child watches and learns in a dynamic format.
There are hands-on projects: your learner will use the Montessori puzzle map (which you can supply) and create a watercolor version of it.
Activity pages accompany each continent: drawing flags of various countries, tracking animals and cultural features, and undertaking scavenger hunts for flags and facts.
Virtual field trips are integrated so the experience goes beyond paper and map — your child “visits” places around the world via guided exploration.

By the end of the course, your child won’t just know the continents and some countries — they’ll feel them, visually map them, recall flags and animals, and have projects they’ll treasure. As the parent, you’ll have a ready-to-go module that aligns with Montessori sensibilities, empowers you to guide discovery (without reinventing the wheel), and sparks meaningful conversations and curiosity about the world.

Why this course makes sense for you
Designed by a certified early childhood Montessori teacher who brings 16+ years of experience.
Self-paced: you control the rhythm. Perfect for a homeschooling schedule where flexibility is key.
Rich variety: video, hands-on art, puzzle map, virtual tours — diverse learning modes which help younger learners stay engaged and retain more.
Age-appropriate (5-9 years): tailored to developmental readiness of early elementary learners.
Builds not just geography knowledge but cultural awareness, map-skills, and confidence in using Montessori materials and projects at home.

How to implement at home
Before you start, gather a Montessori puzzle map of the continents (or purchase one if you don’t have it).
Set aside a weekly slot (or bi-weekly if your schedule is lighter) to work through one lesson together.
Watch the video together, discuss what you see (countries, flags, animals, culture).
Use the activity pages with your child — drawing flags, doing the scavenger-hunt, talking about what makes each continent special.
Guide the art/project portion: the watercolor version of the puzzle map is a wonderful keepsake and reinforces tactile learning.
Follow the virtual field trip prompts: perhaps take advantage of online resources, or even “pause” and find extra pictures/videos together for extra engagement.
At each lesson’s end, pause and ask your child: “What stuck out the most? Which flag did you like? Which animal surprised you? What would you like to learn more about?”
Celebrate completion: when all 7 lessons are done, you could display the finished puzzle map, and perhaps host a “world travel” geography day at home where your child shows off what they learned.

Both my girls thoroughly enjoyed this class. Ms. Kelsey did a great job weekly with introducing the continents, its countries, flags and stand out information. The highlight was the virtual tours/trips they went on and putting together their continents map. Thank you!
