Step into the wonderful world of Thornton W. Burgess, where curious creatures come to life through story! Each week, we’ll read from The Burgess Bird Book for Children or The Burgess Animal Book for Children. These beloved classics introduce children to nature through the eyes of animals, blending gentle storytelling with real natural history.
This class is designed to nurture a love of reading, spark curiosity about the natural world, and strengthen comprehension in a fun, interactive way.
There will be a quick check-in and preview of the animal or bird of the week.
I will then read a chapter from a Burgess Book. Learners will have the ability to draw the featured animal or bird while I am reading to them. This allows each child to notice details, connect art with science, and make the lesson their own.
Learners can share their drawings if they wish. I will highlight one or two fun facts about the animal’s habits, habitat, or unique traits.
*Optional Homework
A short set of 3–5 questions will be provided each week to reinforce listening skills and story details. Families can use these at home for review.
Drawing Practice: Children may color or expand on their class drawing during the week.
By the end of this class, learners will:
-Develop attentive listening and comprehension skills.
-Strengthen observation by connecting story details with drawing.
-Explore nature themes through age-appropriate classic literature.
-Build a gentle foundation in natural science (bird and animal identification, habitats, and behaviors).
-Enjoy the joy of storytelling while practicing self-expression.
